This study was designed to explore the factors that influence international /oversea students’ decision making of tertiary degree program choices for the universities with the programs of tourism/hospitality in Taiwan. The study used qualitative approach and mainly based on individual interviewing, group interview, and focus group to reach a better understanding of international students’ decision making process and the crucial reasons for the university selection. The samples were chosen from the international students, the international students’ friends, the faculty members in the department of international tourism in Tamkang University. By implementing triangulation method for the data collection in this study, different opinions from various perspectives can be achieved. It was found that there were 15 reasons to influence international students’ choices on the universities in Taiwan. They were local culture, local people, food, program quality, English speaking environment, Mandarin learning opportunity, off-class free time, personal connection (friends & families), study abroad program (other than Taiwan), faculty academic reputation, university reputation, living environment, geographical location, internship program, and tuition fee. The findings of this study is expected help not only Taiwanese universities but also all universities in the world to examine the disadvantages and advantages of their international student recruitment strategy and create a more effective and attractive school program to compete with other schools one the international higher education market. Due to the limited samples collected, the outcomes of this study can only serve as an insightful reference for the university student recruiting teams. There might be a further study needed with a larger scale of samples, wider range of university premises, and a quantitative approach to obtain a clear view of the international students’ motivation on university selection in Taiwan.
